trauma

It’s a common misconception that the word “trauma” describes a single violent or otherwise earth-shattering event. While acute trauma does sometimes result from such experiences, this is not always the case.

The late Dr. Francine Shapiro, the originator and developer of EMDR, said that any event that has a lasting negative effect on the self or psyche is by its nature “traumatic.” As we accept this definition and begin the work of unraveling our past associations, we find that even seemingly trivial childhood experiences can manifest themselves in maladaptive physiological storage of memory and, thus, present as latent adult disturbance that creates a lasting negative effect.

WHAT CAN WE DO
ABOUT TRAUMA?

EMDR is widely considered to be one of the gold standard treatments for trauma of all types. As a therapist, one of my favorite things about EMDR is that it works “behind the scenes” and does not require the client to rehash events or discuss them at length.

I will work with you at a pace customized to your unique needs. Your safety and comfort is always a priority. Early in our therapeutic relationship, I’ll help you develop coping skills that can bring immediate relief to current disturbances while we address the deeper needs.
